Current affairs briefing for 23rd May, 2007.

Hi friends,

It makes me happy to learn from quite a few of you that you have done reasonably well in the Civils Prelims.  All the best to you all.  I have been getting some enquiries about solutions for the GS paper.  If anyone of you can forward a copy of the paper, I would surely be able to do so.

Here goes our link for today:

In today's briefing:

1.  In addition to what papers say, we should also at times watch carefully the official line on any subject; more so when it comes the Prime Minister himself on a subject like inflation.  Take a look.

2.  Abel Prize is awarded.  What is the field in which this prize is awarded?  By whom?  And a bit extra about its genesis.

3.  More services will be coming under the service tax net from June 1.

4.  India's unenthusiastic performance in Cricket.  Sometimes we have to keep track of a sport, even if we are not interested in it.

5.  IIMs are set to lose their financial independence.

6.  This is like a bolt from the blue.  Jammu and Ladakh now want independence from Kashmir.  I don't know what to say.

7.  One important abbreviation to remember -- PFDF.

That's all for today.  Happy reading.

Ramakrishna
