Current affairs briefing for 23rd May, 2008

Hi friends,

Here goes our link for today:

http://indiancurrentaffairs.blogspot.com/2008/05/23052008.html

In today's briefing:

1.  Some excellent quotes from Karl Marx and George Santayana.  Can't miss them.  Too good.

2.  Ever heard of the 'promote licence' concept?  This is in oil exploration.

3.  A very relevant article from Jeffrey Sachs.  This time on improving farm productivity and how World Bank advice to poor countries has gone sour.  It has, thankfully, identified its mistake and seems to be making course corrections.  Look at it.

4.  A recap about treaty shopping.  Remember the term?

5.  How many passports are issued by India in a year?  Any idea?  Now TCS is getting a contract to issue your passport.

6.  A look at India's spice exports.  They are in news because, we have crossed the $1 bn mark per year.  But what are all included in 'spices'?

7.  Why are petro majors promoting the concept of selling branded fuels?

8.  Ahimsa silk is going places.  Remember the concept?

9.  A new side effect of global warming.  Very threatening.

That's it for today.  Happy reading.
