Friday, April 20

Here is an interesting way of earning money -- not from any fly-by-night operator.

Hi friends,

In my last such type of mail, I wrote to you all about AGLOCO.  Many of you have joined and we are all only a few weeks away from getting benefited from AGLOCO.

A similar concept like AGLOCO, but slightly different from it, in that it lets us earn at least a part of our mobile bills -- ALL FOR FREE OFCOURSE -- is MGINGER

I recently joined MGINGER because a friend recommended it to me. I am now promoting it to you because I like the idea and I want you to share in what I think will be an exciting new mobile concept.

MGINGER's story is simple:

Do you know that we can make our mobiles pay for their bills by just agreeing to receive some ads in a day?  Not more than 10 per day? (Even if we want to, they won't allow it.)  And these ads can be related to the fields that we are interested in?

Advertisers are paying tons of money to reach you through SMS.  How much of that money are you making? NONE!

MGINGER thinks you deserve a piece of the action.

MGINGER collects advertisements from companies who want to reach their targeted audience.

MGINGER will work to get its Members their share of this ad pie.

MGINGER is building a new form of online community that they call an Economic Network. They are not only paying Members their fair share, but they're building a community that will generate the kind of fortune that YouTube made. But instead of that wealth making only a few people rich, the entire community will get its share.

What's the catch? No catch - no unwanted calls and no spam - membership is free. Privacy is a core value and MGINGER never sells or rents member information.

So do both of us a favor: Sign up for MGINGER right now! If you use this link to sign up, I automatically get credit for referring you and helping to build MGINGER.

http://www.mginger.com/index.jsp?inviteId=32

As you all would have known by now, I promote only those that are beneficial for my user groups -- in the real sense of the term.

Thanks

Ramakrishna

4.  And our Professor from IIMA doesn't fail to impress me with his cogent reasoning.  Look at how it smothers to pieces some notions about reservations.  Worth a read.

Sunday, April 15

Current affairs briefing for 15th April, 2007.

Hi friends,

Here is today's current affairs link:

And here is the updated quiz link:

http://discover-it.blogspot.com/2006/09/quiz.html

In today's briefing:

1.  Let's recap the sales tax reform agenda.

2.  What is SHCIL?  It's CMD is sacked.  Let's see why.

3.  What do you understand by 'Pole Position' in racing?  Car racing or horse racing?

4.  A qucik recap of India-China border dispute.

5.  Gene mapping in monkeys, chimpanzees and the humans.  Look at how close we are.  I always used to get confused in my degree class when the lecturer uttered the word 'rhesus monkey'.  I was pleasantly surprised that the high sounding scientific name refers to the monkeys that we usually see nowadays in cities and everywhere.

6.  Some tidbits about Galapagos Islands.  Who brought them to fame?  The country they belong to?

7.  Ever heard of "The Pool"?  The movie?

8.  Some tidbits about PC Joshi and Sundarbans.

9.  I think we can also at times do with a bit of gossip; don't we?  Let's gossip a bit about Prince William and his girlfriend.  Something is worth gossipping when somebody is making out with someone or breaking out with someone.

That's all for this holiday folks.

Happy reading.

Current affairs briefing for 14th April, 2007.

Hi friends,

Here goes today's link:

http://indiancurrentaffairs.blogspot.com/2007/04/14042007.html

I have updated the quiz also; take a look at:

http://discover-it.blogspot.com/2006/09/quiz.html

In today's briefing:

1.  As a civil servant when you are asked to come out with some measures at curbing the excise duty evasion, what would you do?  Look at what the government did.  And find out where you stand.

2.  How much do you know about transfer pricing?  Though it may look complicated at first; it is in fact very simple to understand.  Take a look.

3.  Can you name the two bacterial leaf blight resistant varieties of rice that were developed indigenously?

4.  Ever heard of lateral entry into the civil service?  In fact at present also there is some such thing; but very prevalent.  Look at my opinion and what the ET editorial says.

5.  If you are ever asked to proffer reasons about why reform measures fail, you can't do without these sane comments coming from Pradeep Mehta.  Take a look.

That's all for today folks.

Happy reading.

Here are my replies to your shoutbox queries

Hi friends,

As I was very busy, I couldn't answer all your shoutbox queries for the last three or four days.  Just now found time to answer them.  Follow the question answer type session given below:

13 Apr 07, 19:17
ranchal: sir, Hedge funds are being heard in the news papers for two days during IOSCO meting, what is it? hw is it managed?

Ans:  See some of the definitions that are available about hedge funds:

Speculative funds managing investments for private investors (in the US, such funds are unregulated if the number of investors does not exceed one hundred).

They vary greatly, but have some or all of the following characteristics. They will be based offshore and are virtually unregulated. They will have small groups of investors, usually rich individuals or institutions. They will aim for an absolute (positive) rather than a relative return; their managers will be incentivised by a performance fee. They will have the ability to go short, and they will have the ability to use leverage.

Funds that are extremely flexible in their investment options because they use financial instruments generally beyond the reach of mutual funds, which have SEC regulations and disclosure requirements that largely prevent them from using short-selling, leverage, concentrated investments and derivatives. This flexibility, which includes use of hedging strategies to protect downside risk, gives hedge funds the ability to best manage investment risks.

The first such fund founded by Alfred Winslow Jones in 1949. Jones' innovation was to sell short some stocks while buying others, thus some of the market risk was hedged.

Vidhya: Yes, sir, not able to read the article. Could you please post the link again?

Ans:  Hi Vidhya, since posted it on Discover It blog.  Read it at http://discover-it.blogspot.com/2007/04/innovation-in-education.html

13 Apr 07, 00:26
raniya: hi sir , i am eager to go throuh your prize winning blog but couldnt find it on the address you posted ..could you please post the link to exact page .

Ans:  Hi Raniya, see the link given above.

13 Apr 07, 00:18
raniya: what are press notes ...who issues them ?

Ans: Hi Raniya, one of the instruments through which government policy statements are released is through Press Notes.  They are usually numbered serially in a given year; hence the notation "Press Note 2 of 2005" etc.  Press Notes usually refer to the policy statements of the Government of India.  Normally policy statements issued by state governments are not defined by this term.

13 Apr 07, 00:16
raniya: has india adopted equator principles??

Ans: Did you follow the link I gave there?  http://www.equator-principles.com/  It shows that it is for institutions; not countries.  Some of the institutions operating in India did adopt these principles.

A bank adopting the "Equator Principles," undertakes to provide loans only to projects whose sponsors can demonstrate to the satisfaction of the bank their ability and willingness to comply with comprehensive processes aimed at ensuring that projects are developed in a socially responsible manner and according to sound environmental management practices.

The Equator Principles are based on the policies and guidelines of the World Bank and International Finance Corporation (IFC).

12 Apr 07, 16:04
Chandana: Sir, Puja Gupta is Femina Miss India Universe

Response:  THANKS for correcting me.  The paper seems to have reported "World".  Remember what I said, when we made this noting?

11 Apr 07, 23:10
VINOD: What is the difference between FDI and FII

Ans: Check this out http://discover-it.blogspot.com/2007/01/fdi-and-fii-difference.html

11 Apr 07, 17:42
amit: Leave the msg here or on my blog, www.amitsrivastava25.blogspot.com

11 Apr 07, 17:40
amit: I have been asked these qs on my Interview in SRCC Delhi Univ. guys let me know, why budget on 28th feb and reason behind savings rate hike

Ans: Budget on 28th Feb is because there should at least be a month's discussion before it is passed.  And passage cannot go beyond March 31st.  If you are referring to interest rate on savings, the reason is usually the monetary policy.  We can say that the repo and reverse repo rates set all the interest rates down the line.  These include the Prime Lending Rates of banks, the deposit rates, rates on bonds and debt paper etc.

10 Apr 07, 11:53
Nithanand: I want to get the Quiz Question which you hav posted...is it possible?

Ans: I am working on it and hope to make it available to you all sometime before the end of this month.  But unfortunately, I have become suddenly very, very busy with my office work and hence the delay.

8 Apr 07, 17:17
vivek: does anyone know about the name of the forum where india,USA,china, brazil,EU and south-africa have joined for developing, promoting bio-fuels??

Ans: Did you read what we covered on 4th March?  Try searching the web for some more info on that.  If it doesn't work; let me know.

---

End of session.  And Happy Reading.
