[Indian Current Affairs:686] Current affairs briefing for 1st December, 2008

Hi friends,

Here we go with our link for today:  http://indiancurrentaffairs.blogspot.com/2008/12/01122008.html

In today's briefing:

1.  Today we cover and think aloud extensively on the aftermath.

2.  Shivraj Patil quits, Chidambaram gets home.  PM announces the setting up of a Federal Investigative Agency.  NSG gets strengthened.  But what further needs to be done?

3.  Some new buzzword gets coined.  Celebrity terrorism.  What is it about?  How will you describe it? How will you describe it?

4.  India accepts gracefully help from Shin Bet and the FBI.  Time it did so.  Well done.

5.  Can there be some global initiative to counter terror?  What could it look like?

6.  Why should we desist from barking at Pakistan?  Understand what is Pakistan internally.  Then the appropriate response would automatically be something different from the usual blame game and tough talk which will yield nothing.

7.  Have we lost our focus on fiannce and economics in our blog?

8.  Language lesson: vapid

9.  What is 'cash based, and whta is .accrual based, accounting?

10.  Know anything about Pilot whales?  Why are they in the news?

That's it for today.  Happy reading.

[Indian Current Affairs:684] Current affairs briefing for 28th November, 2008

Hi friends,

The Mumbai trauma is still continuing as at the time of writing this.

Here is our post for today:  http://indiancurrentaffairs.blogspot.com/2008/11/28112008.html

In today's briefing:

1.  The size of Mumbai continues.  I think aloud on reforming our political system.

2.  And also point out to you a very good piece (critique) written by PR Ramesh.  I am in agreement with him.

3.  We all express our deep sympathies and sorrow for those bereaved families.  It is in times like these we are left to wonder whether we should stay still in our sorrow, grieving over the dead.  As doing so would perfectly fulfil the expectations of the terrorists, I decided to continue with our blogging.  Not taking a break.  To hell with the terrorists, they can't stop us from learning.

4.  The incident in Mumbai is going to affect a spike in terrorism related insurance claims.  Some figures in this connection.

5.  Government is considering giving a boost to the housing sector by giving some kind of an interest subvention.

6.  Know about Effie awards?  Ofcourse, this year their sound bites are lost in the din that is going on in Mumbai.

7.  We take a detour in language lessons to know about Ninjas, Black Swans and Fat tails.  What are they?

8.  Obituary: VP Singh.  Don't ask me who is this guy.

That's it for today.  Happy reading.

[Indian Current Affairs:673] Current affairs briefing for 13th November, 2008

Hi friends,

Here goes our link for today:

http://indiancurrentaffairs.blogspot.com/2008/11/13112008.html

In today's briefing:

1.  We take a hard look at the rebound seen in the IIP figures.  What is the reason for this jump amidst this gloom?  What can the government do about sustaining it?

2.  If you are asked to describe the pall of gloom that is present everywhere on the economic firmament at this juncture, can you descibe it about 200 words?  If so, will it be like what is noted in today's ET?

3.  Arun Maira, one of India's industry veterans shares his thoughts on some concepts that need to be redefined or changed by us to move ahead from where we are today.  Is it too early to think of the present times as tectonic shifts in the economic scene?

4.  NTT DoCoMo, the Japanese giant makes an entry into the Indian telecom scene.

5.  Crude tests some recent lows in pricing.

6.  Margaret Alva gets the boot.  Will she stick around in Congress?

7.  India test fires Shourya missile.

8.  Ever heard of Asklaika?  This is a very interesting company.  It has tied up with Airtel to offer an innovative service to all of us.

9.  Chandrayaan I makes quite progress.  Let us expect some exciting news in the next couple of days from this.

That's it for today.  Happy reading.

1. India's exports are presenting a worrisome picture.  They are going down.  The talk of our being not so dependent on the developed world for our economic growth now needs some explanation.

3.  Why is the current heavy infusion of liquidity into our money markets not fuelling inflationary pressures -- both globally and locally?

4.  I am sure you have heard of Web 2.0.  Can you define it?

6.  Quantum of Solace is a Box Office hit.

[Indian Current Affairs:670] Current affairs briefing for 10th November, 2008

Hi friends,

Here is our link for today:

http://indiancurrentaffairs.blogspot.com/2008/11/10112008.html

In today's briefing:

1.  What are CDs and CPs?  For the beginners, that is.

2.  M&A deals are at record lows.  What does this indicate?

3.  RBI looks set to regulate payment systems - starting with prepaid cards.

4.  A very good article explains how India benefited out of the generous capital inflows in the last couple of year by a share larger than what is due it.  It also argues by the same logic, it would be worst sufferer when capital inflows dry up.

5.  As the capital inflows are drying up and the stock markets are in a bearish phase, what should you do?  An expert's take on the issue.

6.  What is the 2G licensing controversy that is asking for the head of India's telecom minister Mr. Raja?

7.  India Japan trade pact hits road block.  Why?

8.  India's first attempts at targeted subsidy delivery.

9.  Defence research and the art of camouflage.  Very interesting reading.

That's enough for today.  Happy reading.

[Indian Current Affairs:669] Current affairs briefing for 9th November, 2008

Hi friends,

First of all many many thanks to all those who took the trouble of filling up the survey form.  The feedback is analyzed and Yusuf and I are working on implementing some of the suggestions and starting today, you should see a gradual implementation of quite a few of the suggestions given out by you.  If you don't see a suggestion of yours not implemented, please don't feel bad.  It would be certainly not out of its lack of merit, but because either we are constrained for some reason or your suggestion would have received many more counter suggestions.

Overall, the response was good and very encouraging.

Here is our link for today:  http://indiancurrentaffairs.blogspot.com/2008/11/09112008.html

In today's briefing:

1.  Perhaps for the first time in our blog, we take a look at subnational identities and their merits.

2.  If you are asked to name two recent historic moments, I am sure you would name US election as one.  But what is the other one that would figure in your list?

3.  Wasn't it just a couple of days ago that we celebrated Jamie Dimon's (the CEO of JP Morgan Chase) visit to India?  Is this bank too headed for trouble?

4.  America's biggest car manufacturers report record quarterly losses.

5.  A look at why Qatar is an important trading partner for India.

6.  A very good article on India's recent sporting successes.

That's it for today.  Happy reading.

[Indian Current Affairs:668] Current affairs briefing for 8th November, 2008

Hi friends,

Thank you all for filling up the survey form.  Mr. Yusuf is done with his data collection and he thanks you all profusely for your feedback.  Let us hope the work he is going to turn out is going to be useful for all of us.  Let us all do our best to contribute to his endeavours in this regard.

Here we go with our link for today:  http://indiancurrentaffairs.blogspot.com/2008/11/08112008.html

In today's briefing:

1.  Ever wondered what is a forex swap line?  Many of you may be wondering about our penchant for forex and currency related issues.  We need to, because it is a matter of time that common people like you and me would be strongly impacted by the currency movements in the near future.  See what is happening to Japan and the US.  Common people trade in forex and currencies there.  A similar thing is bound to happen in emerging economies also in due course of time.  So, what is a forex swap line?

2.  The slow down is for real and the first ever signs of India Inc feeling the heat are in evidence on the employment scene.

3.  What would you say about the idea of India?  Ever formulated one?  Look at my views in the context of the probe into Malegaon blasts.

4.  I lifted whole / generous portions from an article on Kissan Credit Cards.  This is an interesting concept and is very vital for financial inclusion.

5.  Look at the poverty scene also in our country.  Very interesting readings from World Bank and the ADB.

6.  Bhutan has got a new King.  Time for me to wander back in time and reminisce about Yul Brynner's role in "King and I".  You should see such classics.  Haha.

That's it for today.  Happy reading.

[Indian Current Affairs:667] Current affairs briefing for 7th November, 2008

Hi friends,

I am back again after attending to some social obligations out of town.  Let us all thank Yusuf Kaydawala for his posts for the last three days.  Hope you have helped him in his survey endeavour.  If not, please do so by filling up the survey here.

Here is our link for today:  http://indiancurrentaffairs.blogspot.com/2008/11/07112008.html

In today's briefing:

1.  Visiting bankers were great news till the other day.  But today, even successful bankers like Jamie Dimon are prefering to keep a low profile.  A very good interview with him from ET.  A must read.

2.  In the process, we reflect and deliberate on why the dollar remains still strong.

3.  We carry the debate forward by looking at Chiang Mai Initiative and its limitations.

4.  Banks have cut the interest rates on FM's bidding.  Why is this bad?  Can you give one reason?

5.  Read anything from George Stigler?  Regulatory capture?  This phrase is important in the present context.  The present financial crisis is seen as the result of failure of financial regulators, if not in full, at least in part.

6.  Why is article 355 in the news?  What does it say about?

7.  Inflation rises again.  But it appears to be no cause for worry; for the moment.

That's it for today.  Happy reading.

[Indian Current Affairs:662] Help improve Indian Current Affairs blog by taking this survey

Hi friends,

It's been more than two years since Indian Current Affairs is born.  It has notched up a subscription base of 2600+ users through its associated Google Group -- Indian Current Affairs.  We have amongst us people from varied and diverse backgrounds reading the daily posts.

In the process it has also notched up some fans and volunteers who are willing to help improve the content and presentation on the blog.  I am sure, most of you already know about Yusuf Kaydawala who is volunteering to write posts frequently on our blog and is determined to help improve the content and functionality of the blog.  He has got lot of ideas in this regard.  He is gung ho about creating a dedicated Orkut group for ICA readers.  To implement some of his ideas on our blog, we need your feedback.  Hence there is a small survey (about 10 questions only) which you can fill up so that we can understand our readers better and give them more relevant content.

I have kept a link to the survey at the top on the left bar of the blog.  Please follow that link and fill it up for me.  Alternately, you can go straight to the survey from this mail itself here.

The survey will stay online so long as the required number of responses are obtained.  Let us all thank Mr. Yusuf Kaydawala for his volunteering and innovative ideas.

Thanks and regards.
