[Indian Current Affairs:790] Current affairs briefing for 21st April, 2009

Hi friends,

In today's briefing:

1.  We take a look at some attention grabbing headlines; just the headlines.

2.  Credit and debit card usage in India; some figures.

3.  Sugar production nosedives to 15 mn tonnes.

4.  Some banking figures - about number of foreign banks and private bank branches.

5.  What are debt recovery tribunals?  How do they function?  Who is a 'receiver'?  How many DRTs are there in the country?

6.  India launches its own spy satellite.  Interestingly the second version gets launched first, even as version 1 is in development stage.

7.  Sustainable development and Jeffrey Sachs are synonymous.  Time we looked at it.

8.  Language lessons: gnaw at; nary; polemic

That's it for today.  Happy reading.
