5. Gene mapping in monkeys, chimpanzees and the humans. Look at how close we are. I always used to get confused in my degree class when the lecturer uttered the word 'rhesus monkey'. I was pleasantly surprised that the high sounding scientific name refers to the monkeys that we usually see nowadays in cities and everywhere.
6. Some tidbits about Galapagos Islands. Who brought them to fame? The country they belong to?
7. Ever heard of "The Pool"? The movie?
8. Some tidbits about PC Joshi and Sundarbans.
9. I think we can also at times do with a bit of gossip; don't we? Let's gossip a bit about Prince William and his girlfriend. Something is worth gossipping when somebody is making out with someone or breaking out with someone.

3. Can you name the two bacterial leaf blight resistant varieties of rice that were developed indigenously?
4. Ever heard of lateral entry into the civil service? In fact at present also there is some such thing; but very prevalent. Look at my opinion and what the ET editorial says.
5. If you are ever asked to proffer reasons about why reform measures fail, you can't do without these sane comments coming from Pradeep Mehta. Take a look.

Ans: See some of the definitions that are available about hedge funds:
Speculative funds managing investments for private investors (in the US, such funds are unregulated if the number of investors does not exceed one hundred).
They vary greatly, but have some or all of the following characteristics. They will be based offshore and are virtually unregulated. They will have small groups of investors, usually rich individuals or institutions. They will aim for an absolute (positive) rather than a relative return; their managers will be incentivised by a performance fee. They will have the ability to go short, and they will have the ability to use leverage.
Funds that are extremely flexible in their investment options because they use financial instruments generally beyond the reach of mutual funds, which have SEC regulations and disclosure requirements that largely prevent them from using short-selling, leverage, concentrated investments and derivatives. This flexibility, which includes use of hedging strategies to protect downside risk, gives hedge funds the ability to best manage investment risks.
The first such fund founded by Alfred Winslow Jones in 1949. Jones' innovation was to sell short some stocks while buying others, thus some of the market risk was hedged.

Ans: Hi Raniya, one of the instruments through which government policy statements are released is through Press Notes. They are usually numbered serially in a given year; hence the notation "Press Note 2 of 2005" etc. Press Notes usually refer to the policy statements of the Government of India. Normally policy statements issued by state governments are not defined by this term.

A bank adopting the "Equator Principles," undertakes to provide loans only to projects whose sponsors can demonstrate to the satisfaction of the bank their ability and willingness to comply with comprehensive processes aimed at ensuring that projects are developed in a socially responsible manner and according to sound environmental management practices.
The Equator Principles are based on the policies and guidelines of the World Bank and International Finance Corporation (IFC).

Ans: Budget on 28th Feb is because there should at least be a month's discussion before it is passed. And passage cannot go beyond March 31st. If you are referring to interest rate on savings, the reason is usually the monetary policy. We can say that the repo and reverse repo rates set all the interest rates down the line. These include the Prime Lending Rates of banks, the deposit rates, rates on bonds and debt paper etc.
